Electronic Privacy

While we have been creating and exploring cyberspace corporations and governments have found it a rich source of personal information. The amount of data being routinely collected about each of us has skyrocketed. These databases are being combined to paint a more and more detailed picture of each one of us.

Even if you never use the Internet there is still much to be concerned about. Cell phones and MetroCards document our locations. Over 2,000 outdoor cameras record the streets of Manhattan.

For a brief overview of some of the issues, see the Issues page.

The Organizations page links to a number of groups dedicated to preserving privacy online.

The Resources page will point you to online tools to protect your privacy and learn more about the issues.

The Software page is divided into sections titled Recommended and Your Mileage May Vary. I have had good experiences with the recommended software. The other section contains general download sites and software that is "under construction", but still interesting.
