By making your own border you can create effects impossible to achieve,
or ridiculously expensive, with traditional matting methods.
Self matting can also be used to increase image size so that they can be placed into standard frames without losing a substantial part of the image. In this case part of the " mat" will be covered by the frame and/or included mat.
Be aware that mattes were invented for a reason, they separate the print from the glass.
When framing a self matted image use a spacer to keep the work from touching the glass,
otherwise moisture can cause the art to become "glued" to the glass
or can contaminate the picture with mold.
