Introduction to Digital Photography Using Picasa

Moving Photos from a Camera or Memory Card to Your Hard Drive

Note - on the
Picasa Media Detector

Picasa and many other graphics programs
call copying photos from the camera or card "importing".

When Picasa "imports" photos it will prompt you for a folder name. to save the folders in. You can use a descriptive name, like "Picnic July 2008", the date you took the photos, or something else that makes sense to you.

Before creating folders with Picasa think through an organizational scheme that makes sense to you.

Picasa will help you find all your photos, but if you go on and use more advanced photo editing software it will be much easier if you know how your files are organized.

Exclude Duplicates

Check this button to show you any pictures you have already copied to your hard drive.

Most cameras give each photo taken a name that contains a unique number. If Exclude Duplicates is checked Picasa will not copy a photo if the same name appears in the folder it is copying to. You can still create duplicates by saving to a different folder. (See the Import Filename Window section for more information on this)

Import step vierw buttons

You can click the left and right facing arrow buttons under the large preview to step through the images.
Import Rotate Buttons
The rotate buttons.

You can select one or more photos to move to your hard drive.

Once you have selected your files, press the Import Selected button.
Or you can press the Import All button.

Do not have Picasa delete your files on the memory card
(if you are offered the option).

This is best done in the camera.

Check that all your files have transferred and then reformat the memory card.
